Being Safer: A Guide for Women with Intellectual Challenges

There are laws that protect the rights of people with disabilities. The Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms says everyone in Canada has the right to live, be free and be safe.
Canada signed an agreement with other countries called the UN Convention on the Rights
of Persons with Disabilities. This agreement says every woman with a disability has the
right to live safely without violence or abuse. She also has the right to privacy and to
decide what is best for herself.

This booklet is a “safety plan workbook”. A safety plan is used to help you to be safer. It
gives you the chance to think about what to do ahead of time and how to handle the
situation if you are abused or you are unsafe.
